How to Care For Medinilla Magnifica (Malaysian Orchid)

This flower is quite worthy of its name (magnifica = majestic, beautiful). It native to the tropical parts, namely the Philippines. In its natural habitat, the rainforest, it grows as a tall shrub with leathery leaves, up to 12 inches large. Among the leaves, grow large flowers. arranged in a cluster. The natural flowering period is from March to August.

While it’s flowering, you can put it inside, but the best choice is to place it in a glasshouse or south-facing window. The ideal setting for this plant is somewhere  bright, but without direct sunlight and to have plenty of space to spread.

From March to August, the required temperature is at least 70°F. You should thoroughly water it with lukewarm, softened water, and provide high air humidity. You should also regularly fertilize it with fertilizer without lime. Due to the dry air, it can be attacked by pests and as a result it will grow very slowly.

From October to February, during the rest period, it should be stationary at a temperature of about 60 °F, to be watered with a very small amount of water. Also, you should not fertilize it until the first flower buds appear. It can be transplanted in early spring.
