How To Care For Gazania

Published by Maggie on

Gazania has narrow lance-shaped leaves that can be downy and lobed near the base, often with lighter colored undersides.  Depending on the color of the flowers they can be serrated, entirely gray or dark green on the upper side and gray on the underside. The leaves are covered with a very thin layer of hairs. The flowers resemble daisies and range in size from 5-7 cm. They can be monochrome (yellow, orange, pink, purple), striped or they can have a dark ring in the middle of the flower.

You can plant it in the garden, in a wooden box or a pot which should be slightly bigger because it has a large root. It blooms from April to October.

Usually it is grown as an annual plant, but actually it is perennial. Since it comes from southern Africa, if you live in an area where the winter it is too strong, it may freeze. To prevent this, in the winter cover it with dry leaves so the frost does not damage the plant.

It must be planted in a location where it will receive a lot of sunlight because otherwise it will not bloom. Also, the soil must have good drainage. Make sure to plant it at a distance of 10-12 inches as root quickly spread. Do not water this plant too much.

It is propagated by seed or by dividing the root in early spring.
