There are some tips in order to grow your own blueberries.
1. Find the right spot
The most important thing is to find the perfect place for your blueberry shrubs. They need a lot of sunlight and good soil. If you have big garden you can make raised beds which will allow the plant to receive the perfect moisture when watering.
2. Give them space
Don’t plant the shrubs in a corner because they can grow up to 6 feet. If you’re growing more than one shrub, plant them with 2.5 to 3 feet distance in between.
3. The planting process
The best time for planting is spring or fall. The blueberry shrub is shallow-rooted, so they need much more water than other plant. Make sure to keep it well hydrated.
As for the soil, you need to find soil that is well drained and doesn’t allow water to stand there for a long period of time. If the water stands in that spot for two days, don’t plant it there. Also, acidic soil with pH of 5.0 is the perfect choice.
- Rind mulch
- Pine bark
- Acid tripe
- Grass clipping
When the shrub starts to thrive you’ll have to prune it regularly.
- Remove the low growths around the bottom
- Clean any dead wood
- Chop away the discolored and short branches
- Clear 1/3 – 1/2 of the wood of the shrubs
6. Soil fertilization
Try to use organic fertilizers because the chemical ones can damage your plant. The best time for fertilization is spring.
If you follow these rules you will enjoy in this fruit for many years.
