How To Grow China Aster

Published by Maggie on

This annual plant originated in China (lat. Callistephus chinensis). It begins to bloom in early August and blooms until the first frosts. There are many different species that vary in height and shape of flowers. They may be short (about 20 cm) and to be planted on the edge of the garden or in pots, or high (50-70 cm) and grown as a cut flower.  In its shape and size, the flower can be simple, spherical, feathered, and you can see them in various shades of pink, red, purple, cream and white.

It is recommended to plant them in a sunny place, preferably protected by a strong wind. The soil should be with good quality and it should be watered regularly, not to allow the deeper layers of soil to dry out.

They usually are sown directly in the place where they will grow in April and May. Young plants should be covered with mulch (dry twigs and small peaces of wood) around the stem to retain the moisture during the hot days in the summer. The high varieties need some kind of support in order to grow upright.
