How To Grow Crocus

Published by Maggie on

The crocus is a harbinger of spring which can be found planted in gardens or meadows. The flowers resemble a wine glass and can be white, yellow, purple or two of these colors. The whole plant is about 10 cm high and has a narrow and long leaves that continue to grow even when the flowers wither.

It grows in a sunny spot or light shade in soil that is well drained. The bulbs should be planted in October to a depth of about 7 cm, and a distance of 10-15 cm in order to grow continuously. You do not have to remove the bulbs from the ground, and if you want to propagate them, divide them in the fall and plant them again.

There is a plant that blooms in the autumn and it looks a lot like crocus. It has few more blossoms that appear without leaves, but the leaves grow in the spring without flowers. It is called autumn crocus (lat. Colchicum autumnale) and it should be planted in August or September, and the care for this plant is the same as for the regular crocus.
